Contents Page Analysis 1

This is a contents page that i have selected from the magazine 'Q'. It is a very well laid out and simple contents page which displays the information required very clearly. it is easy to understand and is a fast source of navigation through the magazine.

The Masthead of the contents page is very clear to read and does not draw too much attention away from the image in the centre of the contents page.
In the image the genre of the band shown are represented by the choice of clothing. In this particular image the band are dressed and presented as a indie alternative genre looking something simliar to Oasis. The hair style and the large aviater glasses represent Liam Gallager which is the leading memeber of Oasis.

The colour scheme of the magazine contents page is very simple and does not aimed to distract the readers from the image. A simple black and red colour formation is used throughout the contents page. This is used to create ideology and representate a Rock magazine. The colours have been stricly restricted to black and red apart from the image. They have used this to draw more attention towards the image and make the page seem more attracting and intresting.

Alternative Genre

Alternative rock (also called alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music that emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Alternative rock consists of various subgenres that have emerged from the independent music scene since the 1980. Here are some examples of current Alternative bands;
  • New wave
  • REM
  • The Cure
  • Coldplay

Metal Genre

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music[1] that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in England and the United States.[2] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Here are some examples of current popular metal bands;
  • Metalica
  • Katakalysm
  • Iron madien
  • AC/DC

Indie genre

In popular music, independent music, often generally abbreviated as "indie", is a term used to describe independence from major commercial record labels and an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing. Some indie bands that are welknown now include;
  • Artic Monkeys
  • The Kooks
  • The Klaxtons
  • The Killers

Possible magazine cover stories

My magazine cover story(main title on the front cover) needs to be intresting and shocking. if the viewer is shocked then he/she is intreaged to read on. I have personally chosen to have i much less subtle aproach. This is because i want my magazine to be the truth and intrest the readers not shcok them. Here are some several stories that i have come up with;
  • *name* tour dates revealed

add more cover stories..

What genre of music would i like my magazine to cover?

For my magazine, i have thought about many different genres of a music magazine. I have looked through genres such as;
  • Metal
  • Rock
  • Indie
  • Jazz
  • Folk
  • Old time musicians

For my particular magazine i would like my to be a rock magazine. I have chosen to do this because i think the aggressive look of the darkness of other rock magazines, attracts audiences very easily and the dark tone creates an eye catching look.

Possible images that could be used on my magazine front cover

I would like my image to be simple yet attracting. Some ideas i have had in the past are;
  • A guitarist holding a guitar in the air
  • A drummer with the full drum kit in dsplay.
  • A Saxaphone player
  • A flute player.

All of these ideas for images representate a different genre of music. For example the guitarist could represent any genre of music and the same with the drum kit. The saxaphone could representate jazz music and the flute would representate i much softer alternative genre of music.

Second image placment ideas

This is one of my second ideas. This would probally include a drummer and a drum kit to fill up the wide space.

The advantage of this image would be that it takes up a large space and attracts people because its large and eye catching.

The disadvantage is that since the image is so large not much space is left for things such as sub storys, titles, logos and other magazine essentials.

Possible front cover images

This is one of my ideas. it uncludes what will be placed in the image and how big and how much space the image will take up.

The large box represents the front cover of an A4 magazine and the smaller one represents the image area.
I have left a large ammount of space at the top and sides. This gives me more space for sub storys, logos, titles and other necessaties.

These are almost identical to the codes and conventions of a normal magazine or any other magazine for that matter. These include the obvious conventions such as;

  • title

  • image

  • barcode

  • 1-4 sub stories

The difference between a normal magazine and a music magazine is that there are several different conventions. Musci magazines are themed more to suit that magazine. Music related, like the logo and cover story.

How my magazines Contents page should be laid out.

The contents page should be Presented very much like the front page. for example a Music magazine or a games magazine would be very much related to the type of magazine. For example, lots of pictures of games and very broad funky text to make it stand out. With college magazines and more formal magazines contents pages, the text is set out to be much easier to read so people know what they will be reading.

How should my college magazines contents page be set out like?
  • It should be easy to understand
  • main storys should be outlined,underlined,cloloured,bolded etc..
  • there should be no distracting pictures cramming the page up making it harder to understand and read.
  • Page numers should be clearly shown and also in order
  • Contact details such as email and fax&telephone numbers should be clearly displayed.

How my magazines front page should be laid out.

different magazines are laid out differently. this is to give a different effect depending on what type of magazine it is. for example, a music magazine is crammed with artist and album releases and everything to do with music and for instance, a college magazine is alot more laid out and formal.

How my magazine should be laid out
My magazine should be ;
  • Formal
  • Stands out
  • Very easy to read and understand
  • Shows what the main story is straight away to attract the reader
  • Have the issue number cleary stated on the page
  • Have the date also Cleary stated
  • The picture should be centred in the page so it is easy to see, this will help people know about the top story and also that it is a college magazine.

AUDIENCE

representation

Brief

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main tesk: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All imagines and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.

Presentation of your work: The presentation of the research, planning and evaluation may take the form of any one, or combination of two or more, of the following
  • A presentation using slideshow software such as powerpoint
  • A blog
  • A podcast
